What's it like to be a Cashier?
Cashiers have many vital duties in retail-based establishments. They are responsible for processing and receiving payments and issuing receipts to customers as they leave with their purchases. Cashiers also answer questions about products, suggest options for items the shopper has selected, and address customer concerns when they return an item.
Tasks and duties
- Managing transactions with customers using cash registers.
- Scanning goods and ensuring pricing is accurate.
- Collecting payments whether in cash or credit.
- Issuing receipts and refunds.
- Redeeming stamps and coupons.
- Cross-selling products while also introducing new ones.
- Resolving customer complaints and providing relevant information.
- Greeting customers when entering or leaving the store.
How to become a Cashier
Cashiers are trained on the job. There are no formal education requirements to become a Cashier.
- Although most jobs for Cashiers have no specific education requirements, some employers may prefer applicants with a high school diploma or equivalent. You should have a basic knowledge of mathematics to process transactions.
- Complete on-the-job training. Training may last a few weeks. In the training, an experienced worker will help you learn how to operate equipment such as scanners or registers.
- Consider taking a cashier training certification class or cashier training courses. These certifications will help you further your career.
