ESL teacher at 51Talk with experience delivering engaging, student-centered lessons to learners.
The good things- Flexible work schedule – Allows teachers to manage their time effectively while working from home. - Work-from-home setup – Convenient and cost-efficient, especially for teachers who prefer online teaching. - International teaching experience – Provides exposure to teaching students from different cultures and backgrounds. - Improves teaching and communication skills – Enhances pronunciation coaching, classroom communication, and student interaction skills.
The challenges- Technical issues – Occasional platform or connectivity problems can affect class flow and lesson delivery. - Limited student interaction time – Short class durations sometimes make it challenging to fully assess student progress. - Schedule stability – Class bookings may vary, which can affect income consistency.

Good for starters and with no ESL experience.
The good thingsGood for starters and wanting to learn about ESL
The challengesThe penalty fees. Even if it's a super emergency reason not to be able to attend class they penalize. Payment for a 25minute class is also low.

My first month was great overall, though building steady bookings remains a challenge.
The good thingsThe work environment is both comfortable and friendly, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual respect. Colleagues are supportive and open-minded, which encourages teamwork and the free exchange of ideas. This positive atmosphere not only makes daily tasks enjoyable but also contributes to personal and professional growth.
The challengesOne of the main challenges I face is the booking system. Since my income depends on the number of students who book lessons, there are times when I have fewer classes, which directly affects my salary. As a new tutor, it can be difficult to attract regular students at first.

My experience was so-so. It was good to have my first ever experience as an ESL teacher in 51talk but I cannot afford to be there longer for I know what my capabilities and abilities are. My skills as a teacher is not only "for their rate."
The good thingsThe trainings were very beneficial and essential for the job.
The challengesThey had a low rate and some concerns won't be recognized.

If there are other available options if you are starting out with 0 experience and want a career out of teaching, then choose that. Just not here.
The good thingsThe students are pleasant to teach. Very receptive and appreciative.
The challenges1. Admin and coaches are so unresponsive. If magrerespond, laging late. Coaches are okay to miss booked coaching sessions without any notification, but the teachers are tagged absent or late (all with huge deductions) when they miss a session. 2. Very low pay vs other ESL platforms

Despite adhering to policies like advance absence requests, I encountered challenges with account management and system-related issues.
The good thingsI have regular students who spoke zero english to atleast basic english.
The challengesThey lock accounts regardless of your good evaluations from students or the number of regular students you have. They offer teachers the option to schedule absences in advance as long as the request is made three days prior. The problem is, they don’t actually honor that. Even if you follow the rules and request an absence three days in advance, they still count it against you and use it as a reason to lock your account. Even if you attend the necessary meetings to have your account unlocked, they just don’t care. The Head Teachers don’t care either—they leave you hanging. The "SUPPORT" ticket system is also unreliable at times. The tech team gets defensive when questioned about lagging classrooms and penalizes you even if it’s the system’s fault that caused you to miss a class.

The experience was tiring but fulfilling.
The good thingsI got to know different people from other country, met their parents and families sometimes. For adults, they're not just my students but they became my friends eventually. I enjoyed the most when it's a Free talk class because they got to share about themselves and through that, I got to know them better.
The challengesI seldom made a day off. Though, it was a flexible time schedule. I chose to do a lot of working time from day to night because I enjoyed it.

    Challenging yet wonderful experience.
The good thingsI got to meet a lot of people with different personalities. I've met professionals, businessmen, and students. I've got a chance to guide and keep track of their English study journey.
The challengesYou don't have a lot of time to study their chosen lesson. You need to have a wide understanding and patience and need to be flexible (or multi-task) to deliver the class perfectly with the correct explanation to your students. Especially you need to be smart and confident.

I would never recommend this to anyone.
The good thingsYou control your time, so that's good. About 50% of the students are quite fun to teach, so you'll be less stressed than normal jobs. But that's it.
The challengesThe company and management itself is not considerate of their online teachers. They keep adding up rules and features that would inconvenience the lives of the teachers. They'll always be hiring not because they're getting more and more students (actually, there was an ordinance or law in the other country where they don't encourage classes outside regular school anymore), but because only a small percentage of the teachers would actually last for a long time. So as of now, I can say that if you've been a teacher in 51Talk for a long time, then it's tolerable but if you're just starting...well, I bid you good luck.

This can helped me a lot, specially when the moment they accepted me even though I don't have any ESL experience, this company taught me how to love your work.
The good thingsWhat I really loved about this company is that they provide training for free, and they have their own lesson materials, which is an advantage for us teachers. They update you and help you grow more in this industry.

It is nice seeing cute students learning to talk in English.
The good thingsStudents are really cute and eager to learn the English language. There are naughty students but I find them challenging to teach and give me more excitement in teaching.
The challengesI do enjoy working here, the most difficult part only is to manage your time properly because every class that I scheduled on my list has only 5 minute break but I enjoyed every second of it.

51talk has been a good employer to me, despite the low salary and many deductions and penalties during absences. The promotion and the way we service and cater our clients was definitely great especially the students. My students are the ultimate reason why I stayed in the platform for so long.
The good thingsGood students. Good class consultants. Nice bookings ( many students )
The challengesthe penalties were a bit much. the support team when there is a problem with some incidents in classes something is slow. So far, that's all. I don't wanna say more.

The good thingsThe more you open your slot schedule, the more money you'll earn. More class equals more earnings. You can open slots based on your own schedule however they require you to open minimum slots during peak hours. You'll earn more if you have classes during peak hours.
The challengesYou will not receive that much care coming from the company. You will not feel like they care for you. Will not invest in you. You are expendable to them. So don't overwork yourself.
