What's it like to be a Sales Assistant?
Sales Assistants provide customer service in retail environments. Their primary tasks involve greeting and assisting customers, processing transactions, maintaining stock accuracy and presentation, and resolving customer inquiries. Sales Assistants work in various retail sectors, such as fashion, electronics, groceries and homewares. They usually work in-store, interacting directly with customers, but also increasingly as part of online retail operations, offering support via phone, email, or live chat services.
Tasks and duties
- Greeting and assisting customers as they enter a store.
- Presenting and promoting merchandise to customers.
- Performing sales transactions and handling cash or credit card payments.
- Handling complaints and resolving customer issues.
- Performing regular stock checks and organizing store displays.
- Coordinating with other sales team members to meet sales targets.
How to become a Sales Assistant
A bachelor degree is not required. However, most employers would prefer candidates with college education.
- 1.Earn a high school diploma.
- 2.Consider getting an associate or bachelor degree in any course. The course can determine the field where you can be employed. For example, a degree in pharmacy can land you a Sales Assistant role in pharmaceuticals. You may also consider taking a technical skills certificate course in customer service from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
- 3.Find an entry-level role to gain experience.
- 4.Go through on-the-job training.
- 5.With enough experience, you can move up to the role of Sales Manager.
