What's it like to be a Cleaner?
Cleaners are usually tasked with handling cleaning and sanitary duties within an establishment. Part of a Cleaner’s responsibility is to ensure that spaces such as restrooms meet sanitary standards. A Cleaner’s job is a highly mobile and active role. As a result, Cleaners need to be reasonably fit to handle and carry large cleaning equipment, to stand and move for long periods of time, and to perform cleaning tasks efficiently.Tasks and duties
- Conducting basic cleaning duties such as sweeping floors, mopping, polishing, dusting furniture and surfaces, emptying trash and wiping windows.
- Cleaning areas such as restrooms and lobbies; cleaning toilets, sinks, mopping tile floors and restocking supplies.
- Cleaning liquid spills and other messes on floors or surfaces.
- Vacuuming carpets, rugs and other dust-prone areas.
- Monitoring and inspecting sanitary standards in assigned areas.
- Maintaining, stocking and organizing cleaning equipment and supplies.
- Transporting dirty linens to designated areas and replacing them with clean linens.
How to become a Cleaner
You can become a Cleaner without a formal qualification. However, many companies prefer jobseekers with at least a high school diploma, as well as the relevant training.
- 1.Obtain at least a junior high school diploma by finishing Grade 10.
- 2.To work in higher-level Cleaner roles in establishments such as hotels and cruise ships, you can pursue the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood Track in senior high school until Grade 12 and choose the Home Economics Strand under the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood Track. The NC II Housekeeping curriculum will prepare you for roles as a Cleaner.
