With the use of different equipment and tools, such as knives, meat grinders and saws, Butchers provide high-quality meats to customers. They can work in retail settings where they are tasked with not only grinding, breaking and trimming meats, but also attending to the specific preparation needs of customers. Butchers can also work in processing plants. Along with the usual tasks of preparing meat, they may also be responsible for slaughtering animals.Tasks and duties
- Cutting, deboning and preparing meats according to the specifications of customers.
- Cleaning and maintaining equipment and tools for cutting.
- Weighing, packaging and displaying meat products.
- Keeping all chillers and freezers in excellent condition and coordinating with maintenance workers for repairs.
- Making sure that the workplace is properly sanitised, and abiding to health safety protocols.
How to become a Butcher
The path to becoming a Butcher requires adequate experience in preparing meat cuts. Pursuing an apprenticeship or on-the-job-training is a common pathway.
- 1.Complete your secondary education certificate.
- 2.Apply for a course in TESDA Meat Slaughtering Operations NC II (Butchery/Meat Cutting). This is a short course in butchery that will last a minimum of 280 hours.
- 3.To be a certified NC II holder, you need to pass an assessment to determine your competency. This assessment will be under the supervision of qualified professors who have been trained in testing students in the field.
- 4.Gain industry experience. Wet markets and local butcher shops typically hire and train new Butchers.
