What's it like to be a Security Officer?
A Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for customers and employees by patrolling and monitoring premises and personnel. Their key tasks include preventing losses and damage by reporting irregularities and restraining trespassers. Security Officers work in a variety of settings such as retail stores, office buildings, banks and hospitals, all of which require the premises to be protected at all times. They sometimes work in shifts and may have to work overnight. Furthermore, they need to collaborate and communicate with law enforcement authorities whenever necessary.
Tasks and duties
- Patrolling and monitoring premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion.
- Inspecting and adjusting security systems, equipment and machinery to ensure operational use and to detect evidence of tampering.
- Responding to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and customers.
- Monitoring and authorizing the entrance and departure of employees, visitors and others to guard against theft and maintain security of premises.
- Writing reports of daily activities and irregularities to inform the concerned authority.
- Coordinating with law enforcement, fire departments, or emergency medical personnel in case of emergencies.
- Training other staff about security procedures, use of security equipment and emergency protocols.
How to become a Security Officer
A bachelor degree is required as well as experience in security and safety. Licenses and certifications are also necessary.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in Criminology.
- 2.Obtain a Security Officer license from the Philippine National Police-Supervisory Office for Security and Investigation Agencies (PNP-SOSIA).
- 3.Obtain a firearms license from the Philippine National Police (PNP).
- 4.Gain experience in security and safety. With some experience in a leadership role, you can move up to the position of Security Officer.
- 5.Postgraduate education can lead to promotion to Chief Security Officer.
