What's it like to be a Librarian?
Librarians manage an entire library and its employees. Their position and duties can vary depending on the type of library in which they're employed. They can work in public libraries, school or university libraries, and special libraries for law firms, government agencies, and private establishments. Their work is different to Archivists who are in charge of preserving and valuating important documents or Curators who manage a specific collection.Tasks and duties
- Establishing and implementing library policies and procedures.
- Ensuring that the library meets the needs and demands of its patrons.
- Organizing, updating, and maintaining the various collections housed in the library.
- Assisting library users in their requests such as locating printed materials or internet resources.
- Cataloging relevant publications, multimedia, and other library resources.
- Researching new trends and popular publications to add to the library’s collection.
- Preparing the budget and allocating funds for the library and its staff.
- Looking after junior library workers and delegating staff duties.
- Developing and maintaining relationships with external bodies such as booksellers and publishing groups.
How to become a Librarian
To become a Librarian, you must be a college graduate, preferably with a bachelor degree in library and information science. Knowledge of organizational techniques, purchasing and conserving written and multimedia materials, and leadership is valued by employers.
- 1.Graduate from college with a bachelor degree in library and information science (BLIS). This is a 4 year course. A college degree in communication, information science, or a related course is also acceptable.
- 2.During the 4th year of college, students must complete at least 200 hours of On-the-Job-Training (OJT) in either a library or information center.
- 3.Pursue a graduate degree in library and information science (MLIS). This two year postgraduate course is a good option for those who did not take library and information science as their college degree but would like to work in this field.
- 4.Take and pass the Librarian Licensure Examination to be licensed as a Librarian in the Philippines. This exam is conducted by the Board of Librarians and supervised by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC).
