What's it like to be an English Teacher?
English Teachers are board-certified professionals tasked with educating students on the English language. This covers skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. - Encouraging students to think critically during reading assignments or literature classes.
- Assigning students to analyze published work, such as media reports, novels, non-fiction books.
- Coordinating with fellow teachers and principals.
- Following guidelines published by the Department of Education.
How to become an English Teacher
English Teachers must be certified educators and experts in their chosen subjects. A degree and a license are necessary to become an English Teacher.
- Get a bachelor in education, preferably a Bachelor in Secondary Education Major in English or a Bachelor in Elementary Education Major in English.
- Study for the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) administered by the Board of Professional Teachers under the supervision of the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC).
- Pass the LET. The LET exam is conducted twice a year: January and July. You may retake the test if you fail.
- Apply for a teaching position at an educational institution of your choice.
- Gain experience as a licensed and employed English Teacher at an elementary or secondary school.
- Consider pursuing higher education, such as a masters degree or PhD in English, literature, or communications.
- Apply for an English Professor position at a university or college after acquiring the required degrees and years in teaching experience.
