What's it like to be a Clerk?
A Clerk handles the daily clerical tasks in an office. This includes recordkeeping of important documents, bookkeeping tasks like issuing checks or invoices, and other office management procedures. They may also be in charge of office supplies, such as monitoring stock or requesting more. A Clerk may also be tasked with using office appliances such as photocopiers and printers to handle documents or spreadsheets.
Tasks and duties
- Creating or maintaining an updated and accessible filing system.
- Handling and sorting incoming and outgoing mail.
- Accomplishing bookkeeping tasks such as issuing checks, receipts, and invoices.
- Preparing and keeping stock of office supplies for general use.
- Providing services for office equipment such as photocopiers and printers.
- Assisting in office communications by receiving calls and forwarding them to the appropriate party.
- Helping organize office arrangements such as booking for travel, accommodations, etc.
How to become a Clerk
Clerks may start with a senior high school diploma in Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) strand or Technical-Vocation strand. However, most companies will require an undergraduate degree. Further studies can be done through short certification courses.

Graduate with either a 2-year Secretarial/Office Management degree or a 4-year bachelor’s degree in business administration, information technology, or other related fields.

Apply for entry-level positions, such as Office Staff, Clerk Admin, and Filing Clerk.

Gain 1-3 years of relevant work experience.
- 4.
Acquire certifications relevant to broaden education. Some examples include TESDA courses such as Customer Services, Bookkeeping, and Front Office Services.
