What's it like to be a Truck Driver?
Truck Drivers operate large vehicles, typically a tractor-trailer or semi-truck, to transport goods and materials over long distances across the country. This role involves driving for extended periods of time, adhering to safety regulations and traffic laws, and delivering goods to their destination on time.
Tasks and duties
- Driving a truck to deliver goods to customers.
- Loading and unloading cargo.
- Recording cargo deliveries.
- Refueling and cleaning vehicles.
- Inspecting trucks and recording issues.
- Reporting mechanical problems to maintenance personnel.
- Planning routes using a GPS.
- Bringing goods to clients on time.
Aside from transporting materials and goods, Truck Drivers can also perform sales and customer service as part of the job. They also inspect their vehicles for mechanical issues relating to safe operation and basic repair work. They are expected to ensure the safe and timely delivery of goods and other articles of trade to customers. Moreover, Truck Drivers work closely with a team of dispatchers to plan routes and track deliveries.
How to become a Truck Driver
- Pass the driver's license examination.
Complete a training program that includes both classroom instruction and hands-on driving experience.
Pass a written test and a driving test to obtain your Commercial Driver's License (CDL), as well as a physical exam to ensure you are in good health and able to operate the vehicle safely.
Obtain endorsements for specialized driving, such as hazardous materials or tanker driving.
Pursue a higher-level CDL.
Seek opportunities with different companies or industries, such as becoming an owner-operator or working in the transportation department of a large corporation.
