What's it like to be a Technician?
Technicians ensure that facilities and equipment are functioning properly. They can install and repair electrical wirings, and perform plumbing and carpentry work. Technicians typically work alongside contractors, builders and architects. They diagnose problems within buildings, then troubleshoot or replace faulty equipment. Technicians can work on appliances, computers and other household equipment.
Tasks and duties
- Checking and repairing electrical systems.
- Troubleshooting equipment and devices to test their efficiency and safety.
- Reading and reviewing architectural plans and repair manuals.
- Performing routine maintenance and fixing structural damages.
- Implementing preventive measures in facilities to reduce the risks of future problems.
- Liaising with suppliers and clients.
- Estimating budgets before starting a project.
How to become a Technician
While not essential, a relevant qualification can improve your prospects of becoming a Technician.
- Take the Technical Vocational track during senior high school. Under the Technical Vocational track, you can choose the Industrial Arts strand where you will learn carpentry, electrical installation, plumbing and automotive servicing.
- After completing your secondary school certificate, you could consider undertaking a college education. While not necessary, it will help boost your employment prospects. This could be a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering.
- Undertake an internship program to apply your skills under a mentor. This will provide you with the necessary practical skills and experience to succeed in the role.
