What's it like to be a Structural Engineer?
Structural Engineers use models to design towers, bridges, dams, and other large structures. Drawing on their knowledge of physics and math, they arrange beams in a structure’s skeleton to ensure maximum efficiency and stability.Tasks and duties
- Designing 2D and 3D models.
- Ensuring the safety and durability of structures.
- Calculating the load and stress limits of structures.
- Selecting the appropriate materials to be used for a structure.
- Investigating existing structures for modifications and repairs.
- Presenting designs to clients and liaising with Architects.
- Mitigating the risk of structure damage due to calamity.
- Complying with legal, safety, and environmental standards.
How to become a Structural Engineer
An engineering degree and PRC license are necessary to obtain this position. Students could get a head start by enrolling in a science high school, choosing the STEM track in senior high school, and maintaining excellent grades in mathematics and science.
- 1.Graduate with a bachelor degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, materials engineering, or another related field.
- 2.Complete an engineering internship at a recognized company.
- 3.Apply for the PRC Licensure Examination in Civil Engineering. The exam is held annually, and examinees need an average of 75% with no score lower than 50% in any area to pass.
- 4.Consider getting a postgraduate engineering degree.
- 5.Apply for membership to the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines. Membership requires at least 2-5 years of structural engineering experience.
