A Design Engineer creates designs for products and systems using science, engineering and mathematical techniques. They usually work with professionals in related disciplines to conceptualize, plan and build prototypes before implementation or production. How to become a Design Engineer
To become a Design Engineer, you need strong engineering and design skills, as well as a working knowledge of prototyping. These skills can be gained through a degree and industry experience.
- 1.Complete a relevant engineering degree. This can take between four and five years of education at university.
- 2.Take advantage of internship opportunities during your studies. Gaining work experience as an intern trains you in the practical application of design principles.
- 3.Obtain a Professional Regulatory Commission license. The exam can be taken after graduation. Depending on the industry you join, a license may increase your chances of getting hired as a professional engineer.
- 4.Obtain certifications or gather proof of successful projects. Having certifications on design tools such as computer-aided design or human-computer interaction adds value to your credentials. A portfolio of work allows you to show off past projects to employers.
