What's it like to be a Social Worker?
Social Workers help people cope with problems. This can include poverty, disability, substance abuse, domestic violence, discrimination, and disaster recovery. Social Workers may directly serve clients, while some act as supervisors, researchers, teachers and community organizers. They typically work in an office or center, but may engage in field work through community and client visits. Some may be required to undergo further training, particularly those that work in healthcare settings.Tasks and duties
- Assisting people to deal with and prevent crises.
- Creating goals with a client, and developing strategies to meet them.
- Researching private and public resources, and linking them up with clients.
- Boosting clients’ well-being and quality of life.
- Helping communities to bring about positive social change.
- Distributing social service programs.
- Working with other professionals, such as those in the medical field, for a client’s holistic treatment.
How to become a Social Worker
Social Workers need a diverse set of skills to help clients from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. They need strong skills in communication, critical thinking, organization, and problem solving. These can be gained by completing a relevant degree.
- 1.Finish a Bachelor of Science in Social Work. This four-year degree will equip you with knowledge on the country’s social structure, poverty development, and marginalized communities.
- 2.Once you’ve graduated, take and pass the Social Workers Licensure Examination. This is given by the Board of Social Workers supervised by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).
- 3.Gain work experience to develop your skills and knowledge. Entry-level roles include Social Service Assistant, Case Aide, and Community Organizer.
- 4.Pursue a masters degree in social work to widen your career options. This will be especially useful if you want to be a Clinical Social Worker or Professor.
