What's it like to be a Pharmacy Technician?
Pharmacy Technicians are involved in the day-to-day operations of a pharmacy. They dispense prescription medication for customers or health professionals, and work closely with Pharmacists who verify these medications. Some other duties for a Pharmacy Technician commonly includes measuring, mixing, counting out, labeling and recording medications. Pharmacy Technicians are expected to maintain accurate patient medication records and manage inventory to ensure medicine availability. Various industries employ Pharmacy Technicians such as retail pharmacies, hospitals, nursing homes and even mail-order pharmacies.
Tasks and duties
- Assisting Pharmacists in filling prescription orders for patients.
- Organizing and managing inventories of medicines and pharmaceutical supplies.
- Labeling and packaging prescriptions, as well as managing patient records.
- Operating cash registers and handling customer transactions.
- Answering queries from customers about over-the-counter medications.
- Complying with the standard procedures and laws related to pharmaceutical practice.
How to become a Pharmacy Technician
In the Philippines, to become a Pharmacy Technician, complete a PRC-accredited training program, pass the Pharmacy Technician Licensure Examination and focus on gaining practical experience.
- 1.Obtain at least a high school diploma or equivalent educational qualification.
- 2.Complete a Pharmacy Technician training program accredited by the Pharmacy Board of the Philippines (PRC).
- 3.Pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) administered by the PRC to obtain licensure.
- 4.Gain practical experience through internships or entry-level positions in pharmacies or healthcare facilities.
- 5.Develop competencies in medication dispensing, pharmaceutical calculations, inventory management, and customer service.
