What's it like to be a Microbiologist?
A Microbiologist identifies and examines the behavior of microorganisms in a variety of environments, mainly performing tests in a laboratory. They study and research many different types of organisms such as bacteria, algae and fungi. They are also involved in the study of viral diseases and the development of new medicines and vaccines.Tasks and duties
- Analyzing microorganisms in laboratories.
- Sampling raw materials, products and environments.
- Performing lab tests.
- Organizing and maintaining the proper storage of records.
How to become a Microbiologist
To work as a Microbiologist, formal education is required.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in biology and a masters degree in microbiology. Other related undergraduate courses you could study include biochemistry, botany, chemistry and physiology. Certain food companies may require a food technology or medical technology degree.
- 2.Pass the certification exam of the Philippine Academy of Microbiology to become a registered microbiologist (RMICRO). Or, pass the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) exam to become a registered Food Technologist or Medical Technologist.
- 3.Non-PhD holders may gain experience through positions in quality assurance or research and development for laboratories, as well as agribusiness, aquaculture and food product companies.
