What's it like to be a Guard?
Guards, Security Guards or Security Officers, are responsible for the safety and surveillance of buildings, goods and people. This profession includes observing for signs of crime, theft or disorder, responding to emergencies, and communicating with law enforcement if necessary. The setting of this role may vary; guards may work in private businesses, public buildings, residential neighborhoods or at special events. The job requires attentiveness, vigilant observation skills, and often physical stamina.
Tasks and duties
- Monitoring and patrolling properties to prevent theft, violence or infractions of rules.
- Inspecting and adjusting security systems, equipment or machinery to ensure operational use and to detect evidence of tampering.
- Contacting police, fire or emergency medical services depending on the situation.
- Writing reports of daily activities and irregularities, such as equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons or unusual occurrences.
- Answering alarms and investigating disturbances.
- Monitoring and authorizing entrance and departure of employees, visitors, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises.
- Operating scanning devices to screen individuals for prohibited articles.
How to become a Guard
Becoming a Guard in the Philippines involves being a Filipino citizen, having at least a high school diploma, passing fitness and background checks, as well as maintaining good moral standing.
- To qualify, you must be a Filipino citizen aged over the age of 18 and possess at least a high school diploma or its equivalent.
- Enrol in a security guard training program accredited by the Philippine National Police (PNP) and pass the examination.
- Apply for and obtain a Security License from the PNP after completing the training program and passing the exam.
- Maintain physical fitness and health as guards may need to perform physically demanding tasks.
