What's it like to be a Food Technologist?
Food Technologists work in laboratories to study the physical, biological, and chemical properties of food. They create solutions for previous problems to improve the quality, taste, nutritional content, and cost of food. Innovation, problem-solving, and attention to detail are crucial to the role. Food Technologists work in food manufacturing laboratories, factories, farms, and kitchens.
Tasks and duties
- Improving the nutritional value, taste quality, and shelf life of food products.
- Adhering to food safety, nutrition, and product quality standards in food production.
- Researching food properties to food properties and applying findings to testing.
- Complying with industry sanitation practices in work sites.
- Recording and documenting findings for collaboration and future use.
- Conducting onsite research and development at farms and restaurants.
Food Technologists work in teams and coordinate with various departments such as supply chain, manufacturing, and marketing; therefore, collaboration and interpersonal skills are advantageous.
How to become a Food Technologist
A bachelor degree and PRC license are required to work as a Food Technologist, along with knowledge of government and industry standards for food safety and nutrition.

Graduate with a bachelor degree in food technology, nutrition and dietetics, microbiology, or another related field.

Complete an internship in a recognized food industry company.
- 3.
Take and pass the PRC Nutritionist–Dietitian Licensure Examination.
- 4.
Decide on a specialization. Available paths for Food Technologists are food fermentation, food biotechnology, product design, or food process engineering.

Seek promotion to higher positions such as Quality Control Manager or Product Development Manager.

Consider postgraduate education in food science, food technology, or another related field.

Join the Philippine Association of Food Technologists (PAFT) to stay updated on the latest industry practices and discoveries.
