What's it like to be an Accountant?
Accountants assess financial performance by documenting transactions and studying financial data including taxes, budgets and accounting records. They can be found both in the government and private sector. Some specialize and hold job titles such as Certified Public Accountant, Investment Accountant, or Auditor. Though their duties depend on their specific role, Accountants generally ensure the accuracy and clarity of financial records. By monitoring asset management, they help businesses and individuals make sound financial decisions.Tasks and duties
- Monitoring and reconciling financial activities such as bank transactions, and income and expenditure.
- Reporting an organization’s financial position.
- Suggesting ways to improve financial procedures, reduce cost, and boost revenue.
- Ensuring that financial documents and processes follow government regulations.
- Checking mismanagement of funds through regular audits.
- Organizing tax documents and submitting them on time.
- Staying updated on accounting trends and best practices.
How to become an Accountant
An Accountant’s work can become the basis for business strategies, risk mitigation, and organizational performance. Therefore formal education is required.
- 1.Complete a four-year Bachelor of Science in Accountancy. This educational foundation will provide you with basic skills and knowledge in accounting, finance and costs, accounting principles and methodologies, and accounting ethics and practices.
- 2.Finish a relevant internship or on-the-job training. This is usually required in the fourth year of your accountancy program. Take this opportunity to apply what you’ve learned in school and get work experience while studying.
- 3.Take the Certified Public Accountant Licensure Examination held by the Board of Accountancy and supervised by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC). This examination, given twice a year, is taken over a span of four days. Though some private businesses do not require their accountants to be certified, this certification can offer you more opportunities for career growth.
- 4.Gain work experience through entry-level roles such as Junior Accountant, Accounting Associate, and Audit Staff.
- 5.Finish a masters degree in accountancy to help advance your career. As an Accountant, you can move up to a managerial position and ultimately to Chief Financial Officer.
