Mead Johnson first made its presence felt in the Philippine nutritional and pediatric field in 1952. The first Filipino salesman was Greg Z. Sycip, hired by LD Seymour, the American sole distributor of MJ Products in the Philippines in the 1950s. In 1957, Mead Johnson International strengthened its presence in the Philippines and opened a local subsidiary office at the Manila Hotel Arcade. The local Mead Johnson subsidiary office was fully incorporated under Philippine laws five years later, in February 26, 1962. This marked the official start of Mead Johnson's trusted leadership in the field of nutrition for children in the Philippines. In 1967, Mead Johnson & Company became a subsidiary of Bristol-Myers Company. Soon afterwards, on August 17, 1968, the Mead Johnson office and plant was officially inaugurated. After Bristol-Myers merged with Squibb in 1989 the Filipino business operations became known as Bristol-Myers Squibb (Phils.), Inc. In 2009, Mead Johnson successfully split off from Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and locally became independently known as Mead Johnson Nutrition (Philippines), Inc.Through the years, Mead Johnson has been able to address a wide range in pediatric feeding solutions for healthy infants as well as those with feeding difficulties. In coordination with the University of the Philippines Institute of Human Genetics, Mead Johnson is the only company that has provided sustained support to children with rare metabolic disorders such as Phenylketonuria (PKU), Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD), Methyl Malonic Acidemia (MMA), and Glutaric Aciduria, for over two decades now.As a corporate citizen, Mead Johnson has partnered with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the non-government organization Kabisig ng Kalahi Foundation for Feeding Hope – a nationwide supplemental feeding and growth monitoring program implemented in the most depressed communities in the country. More than 90% of children beneficiaries of the program have been graduated to normal nutritional status.Mead Johnson has also partnered with the National Competitiveness Council (NCC) of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Kabisig ng Kalahi and the Department of Education, for the school-based feeding program Pasiglahin ang Estudyanteng Pinoy (PEP). Drop out rates attributed to malnutrition in beneficiary schools have been dramatically reduced to less than 1%, significantly lower than the national average which ranges from 25% to 33%.Mead Johnson continues to pursue nutritional advancements on behalf of children throughout the world. Customs and cultures may differ; but children everywhere are alike in one important way: They all deserve the benefits of science-based nutrition.
