Depending on the disability, teaching techniques can include individualized instruction, problem-solving assignments and small group activities, and other forms of interventions such as Speech and Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy. The program includes a transition plan outlining specific steps to prepare students with intellectual disabilities for middle school or high school or in the case of older students, a job or post-secondary study.Teachers review the Individualized Education Program (IEP) with the student’s parents, school administrators, and the student’s general education teachers. Teachers work closely with parents to inform them of their child’s progress and suggest techniques to extend learning at home. Special education teachers design and teach appropriate curricula, assign work geared toward each student’s needs and abilities, and grade papers and homework assignments. They are involved in the student’s behavioral, social, and academic development, helping them develop emotionally, feel comfortable in social situations, and be aware of accepted public behavior. Preparing students for normal life after graduation is also an important aspect of the job. Teachers provide students with career counseling and guide them in the daily household routine. We are on the move, building a better future for our special needs community.
