What's it like to be a Technical Writer?
Technical Writers are professionals skilled in converting complex technical terminologies and concepts into simple language that can be understood by a non-technical audience. Typical duties involve creating user guides, online help resources, white papers, technical proposals or instruction manuals. Almost every industry, from software development and manufacturing to healthcare and scientific research, has a place for Technical Writers. These professionals often work side by side with product designers, engineers and project managers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the product or service.
Tasks and duties
- Gathering and analysing technical information about products, services or concepts to be documented.
- Writing, editing and maintaining technical documentation such as user manuals, product descriptions and project specifications.
- Collaborating with subject matter experts to ensure accuracy and coherence of the documentation.
- Converting complex technical terminologies into simplified, understandable and user-friendly content.
- Working with graphic designers and illustrators to visually represent the technical processes and concepts.
- Reviewing and revising documents as new issues arise.
- Implementing feedback from users or clients to continually improve the quality of technical documents.
How to become a Technical Writer
Formal education is not required although employers may prefer to hire candidates with a college degree or higher especially for engineering and medical fields. Writing experience and a strong portfolio can boost your chances of getting the job.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in computer science, engineering, medicine or physics. Some employers also consider candidates with a bachelor degree in communication or English.
- 2.Build a portfolio of technical writing. This can be composed of user manuals, technical reports, white papers or technical proposals.
- 3.Consider taking a technical writing course such as the one offered by Google.
- 4.Develop specialization in a particular industry such as information technology or medicine.
- 5.Post-graduate degrees in engineering or medicine can open more opportunities for you as a Technical Writer.
