What's it like to be a Retail Sales Assistant?
Retail Sales Assistants are primarily responsible for interacting with customers to provide information, advice and assistance with purchases. They work in physical retail environments, such as department stores, boutiques and specialty stores, often standing for long periods of time and sometimes working evenings, weekends and holidays. Common duties include stocking shelves, processing payments, handling returns and maintaining a clean and organised store space. Excellent customer service skills are essential in this role. Retail Sales Assistants may also have the opportunity to specialise in specific product categories depending on the type of store they work in.
Tasks and duties
- Greeting customers and understanding their needs.
- Recommending, selecting and helping locate the right merchandise based on the customer requirements.
- Handling customer complaints, issues and queries.
- Explaining the use and advantages of merchandise to customers.
- Setting up and maintaining attractive visual display of merchandise in the store.
- Managing transactions at the cash register and handling returns or exchanges of goods.
- Assisting with inventory, including receiving and stocking merchandise.
