What's it like to be a Massage Therapist?
Massage Therapists massage their clients’ sore, tense and injured areas. They also communicate with their clients to specify which areas of their bodies need treatment. This allows Massage Therapists to identify the source of pain so they can provide the best massage techniques for the issue. Massage Therapists can work at a clinic, or travel to their clients’ homes to provide professional massage services.
Tasks and duties
- Talking with clients about their symptoms, medical history and therapy goals.
- Evaluating clients to locate painful or tense areas of the body.
- Manipulating muscles and soft tissue.
- Documenting client conditions and progress.
- Preparing, blending and applying oils.
- Collaborating with other healthcare professionals such as physiotherapists, chiropractors and physicians to develop treatment plans for clients.
How to become a Massage Therapist
To become a Massage Therapist, you need to undergo training and pass a licensure examination.
- If you aspire to become a Massage Therapist, you should be at least a high school graduate. You can take the Massage Therapy National Certificate (NC) II offered by TESDA. It is a short-term course that will train you in providing relief, comfort and healing to patients.
- The licensure examination, administered by the Department of Health (DOH), is also a requirement for you to practice massage therapy. To qualify, you need to meet the following requirements: be at least 18 years of age or have a high school diploma or graduate equivalency diploma; completion of a course of study at a recognized massage school or completion of an apprenticeship program that meets standards approved by the Board of Massage Therapy; pass an examination administered by the Department of Health.
