What's it like to be a Laboratory Technician?
A Laboratory Technician analyzes samples taken from tests and provides reports on the results. They can work in medical, research, and educational facilities. They carry out tasks according to the instruction of their superiors in a laboratory.Tasks and duties
- Conducting laboratory tests under instructions of superiors.
- Recording, analyzing and reporting data results from lab tests.
- Preparing, cleaning and maintaining equipment for lab work.
- Organizing and maintaining inventory of specimens.
How to become a Laboratory Technician
This position requires a bachelor degree and typically a PRC license in Medical Technology. Some companies accept fresh graduates for this position, although other companies require 1-2 years of prior work experience. Laboratory Assistants can be promoted to this position.
- 1.Graduate from a bachelor degree program in medical technology, pharmacy, biology, or another related field.
- 2.Pursue an internship working at a laboratory to get on-the-job experience.
- 3.Apply to take the bi-annual PRC Licensure Examination for Medical Technicians, and renew your license every three years.
- 4.Apply as a Laboratory Assistant at an educational, medical, or research institution.
- 5.Gain 1-2 years of work experience and advance to the role of Laboratory Technician.
- 6.Advance to higher positions such as Laboratory Supervisor or Laboratory Manager.
- 7.Consider taking a masters or doctoral degree in medical technology, biomedical engineering, or biochemistry.
