What's it like to be an IT Support Engineer?
IT Support Engineers’ job is to investigate and find solutions to IT issues, including hardware and software malfunctions and network failures, to help companies function properly. IT Support Engineers typically work with Technical Leads, within an organization’s IT department. They may sometimes be referred to as IT Support Technicians or Technical Support Analysts. However, their responsibilities can still vary from company to company. They’re also expected to have strong interpersonal skills in order to efficiently understand and address clients’ computer-related concerns.
Tasks and duties
- Installing and configuring a company’s hardware, software, and network systems.
- Delivering IT support to clients by responding to queries and requests followed by providing appropriate solutions.
- Monitoring and maintaining computer systems regularly.
- Documenting technical incidents and requests for internal reference and tracking.
- Collaborating with clients and customers to continuously improve their IT-related requirements.
- Creating necessary manuals, guidelines, and other communications to grow the company’s IT knowledge base.
How to become an IT Support Engineer
To become an IT Support Engineer in the Philippines, you need a combination of relevant skills and experience in the IT industry. Certifications are often not required, but degrees are highly sought after.

Complete a bachelor degree in the field of IT or Computer Science. Some companies may also require you to simply complete a degree in any field. However, graduating from the abovementioned programs may be beneficial.

Acquire first-hand experience in managing computer applications and systems by taking an apprenticeship or entry-level positions in a reputable organization’s IT department. Either way, you will have the chance to not only learn more about technical requirements, but also enhance your communications skills which are essential in becoming an IT Support Engineer.

Explore internal promotions or opportunities with different companies to grow your expertise further. As IT Support Engineers have a senior role, some companies might require you to have many years of experience in IT before they consider promoting you.
