What's it like to be a Carpenter?
Carpenters work in residential, commercial and industrial construction. Using wood, lumber or ply board, they make small and big structures according to the design requirements of the project. The industries that employ Carpenters include construction, real estate, public administration and defense, community maintenance, the arts (such as theater, film and art management) and private households. Many carpenters are self-employed.Tasks and duties
- Liaising with engineers and foremen regarding construction requirements.
- Understanding and executing designs, layouts and blueprints.
- Determining supply requirements and drafting cost estimates.
- Using power and hand tools.
- Fitting and building according to specifications.
How to become a Carpenter
There are no educational requirements to become a Carpenter. However, experience and formal training can improve opportunities for Carpenters to work for larger companies or in other countries.
- 1.Get a certificate in carpentry from a vocational institution. Courses are offered in public and private institutions.
- 2.Receive practical training in carpentry through an apprenticeship. Senior Carpenters usually hire juniors to assist them.
- 3.Experienced and highly skilled Carpenters can be promoted to Field Supervisor or Foreman.
