What's it like to be a Buyer?
A Buyer is also known as a Purchasing Agent, and they are responsible for processing purchase orders and making sure they are of good quality. Buyers can enhance profits by doing preliminary research, and negotiating and sourcing the best goods at competitive prices. Understanding market behavior should be a Buyer’s top priority, and they should also have enough knowledge to predict potential trends in the future. Buyers also perform product tests and evaluations, and they study competitors to help determine the merchandise being shelved in different marketplaces.Tasks and duties
- Aligning merchandise requirements with the supplier base, managing inventory, and analyzing forecasts.
- Ensuring the availability of subcontracted parts and other supplies.
- Liaising with suppliers for lower material costs and payment terms.
- Overseeing existing orders to ensure that deliveries arrive on time.
- Coordinating with the management team to ensure the accuracy of all orders.
- Studying market trends and making informed buying decisions.
How to become a Buyer
The requirements to become a Buyer vary depending on the industry, but employers typically look for applicants with at least a high school diploma.
- 1.Complete your secondary school education under the ABM Strand (Accountancy and Business Management).
- 2.Since some employers seek candidates with a more formal background, consider taking a bachelor degree in business, accounting, or other related fields. Taking a graduate degree in business administration may also boost your chances of employment.
- 3.If you’re applying for an entry-level position, it would be beneficial to accept on-the-job training. During this time, field professionals will train you on how to perform primary job functions, such as inventory and purchase management.
