What's it like to be an Architect?
Architects are professionals trained in planning, designing, and overseeing the construction of structures that eventually become homes, offices, and other building facilities. They create the blueprint for construction projects as well as manage the project itself. Unlike engineers, Architects focus more on the style and design of a building. Types of structures that need Architects include skyscrapers, homes, and office buildings. Architects may work on design projects for new constructions, or conservation projects for existing structures.Tasks and duties
- Drawing up designs using computer-aided design (CAD) applications.
- Giving both aesthetic and technical advice on projects.
- Developing, leading and supervising construction projects onsite.
- Communicating with clients.
- Conferring with construction teams about project feasibility.
- Keeping up to date with building codes and zoning laws.
- Conducting cost analysis of a building project.
- Analyzing project literature such as environmental impact studies.
How to become an Architect
Formal education in architecture is required to become an Architect. It provides you with knowledge and skills to plan, design, and construct buildings.
- 1.Finish at least a five-year course in architecture at a college or university accredited by the government. Subjects may include: design, math and engineering, history, and theory of architecture.
- 2.During your fourth year, students are required to get On the Job (OTJ) training or an internship at an architectural firm. A licensed Architect will monitor and supervise you to see if you are qualified to be a licensed Architect. Your work performance will be evaluated by your immediate managers and will be submitted to the OTJ coordinator.
- 3.After graduating from a BS Architecture course, you need to pass the Architectural Licensure Examination (ALE) which is held twice a year in January and June. This is conducted by the Board of Architecture, under the supervision of the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC).
