A MISSION TO PROMOTE CHRISTIANITYIn April 1968, with the two able groups, together called United DoctorsService Corporation, the vision of a Metropolitan Hospital came to life. With a mission to promote Christianity through providing genuinely caringmedical services, the hospital was given its Chinese name that translatesas “founded in honour and reverence to Christ.”Metropolitan Hospital began its service to the public with a 3-storey156-bed capacity edifice in Masangkay, Manila equipped with operatingrooms, delivery rooms and nursery. The late Dr. Victor So was the firstmedical director of the hospital.1970s – A DECADE OF RAPID GROWTHThe 1970s showed rapid growth for the hospital as seen with its aggressiveacquisition of that time’s latest medical equipment - 6 operating X-raymachines, a Hemodialysis machine, an intensive cardiac care unit andrespirator machine. It was in the same decade when the coronary ICU wasestablished (1971). In the mid-70s, a 2-storey building was constructedinside the hospital compound that housed numerous doctors seekingaffiliations with the growing hospital. In 1976, the hospital expanded up tothe 6th floor with 308 beds in all. Around the same year, the MetropolitanHospital College of Nursing was born. Hence, the hospital became knownfor its superior medical care not only throughout the greater Manila areabut all over the country.1980s – CONTINUED ADVANCEMENT IN TECHNOLOGYTo address the growing needs of its clientele, Metropolitan Hospital continued to advance in the 1980s. During this period, the hospital established its satellite pharmacy, department of ultrasound, CT Scan and Computer System, and laser and surgical ICU.1990s – FURTHER GROWTH IN DEPTH & SCOPE OF SERVICESIn 1995, a new group of investors came in to develop the hospital services further. A 30-room executive suite wing and semi-private wards were made available, as well as state-of-the-art diagnostic center which included Ultrasound, EEG, Colposcopy, Pulmonary, Mammography, and Occupational Therapy. Of course, it was also during this time when Metropolitan Hospital’s GI Endoscopy unit, the first & the best in the country, was established.2000s - A NEW NAME, A NEW FACEIn 2005, Metropolitan Hospital stepped up to a new level in the industry. With this, a new name and face was given. Metropolitan Hospital became Metropolitan Medical Center. The new face symbolizes the growing and nurturing aspects of the tree and the green color manifests life and healing of oneself. The gold color symbolizes the glow of health, excellence and quality. This solidifies its dream to leap to a higher level of service and competence.2010s & ONWARDS – PROGRESS AS A WAY OF LIVINGThroughout Metropolitan Medical Centre’s history, a common theme prevailed: Progress. Continued advancement in medical learning, continued expansion of its physical amenities, continued acquisition of the best and state-of-the-art medical equipment – all these were at the core of Metropolitan Medical Centre. And rest-assured, it will always be. Such paradigm of unending desire for progress has brought about the birth of 3 Centres of Excellence: The Heart & Cardiovascular Institute, the Oncology or Cancer Institute, and a bigger and better Endoscopic Institute.
