Historical ProfileThe post-war years saw the resurgence of the shipping industry, and along with it the realization of producing competent deck officers to professionally man commercial vessels. It was against this back drop that a group of dedicated merchant marine officers established a nautical school at the Marsman Building in Port Area, Manila. This eventually became knownas Philippine merchant marine School, or more popular known as “PMMS” which was incorporated in December of1952.PMMS initially offered a two-year nautical course, an Associate in Nautical Science (ANS), with a starting batch of fifty (50) students. The introduction of new courses and the growing interest in maritime careers pushed enrollment levels to semestral average of 5,000 by 1979. This encouraging response to PMMS prompted the latter to develop a2.3-hectare campus in Las Pinas, which was inaugurated 1980.The original site in port Area, however, continued to expand. In 1979- 1980 School Year, it occupied the 4 th and 5 th floor of the Manufacturers Bank Building in plaza Sta.Cruz, Manila and still later on the Cartimar at Claro M. Recto Street, Manila. Today, PMMS Manila is located at 1571 Lope De Vega St., corner Rizal Avenue, Sta. Cruz, manila. The Las Piñas site had the advantage of space and soon became the central site of the school. It now offers courses in Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation, Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Customs Administration, Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management, Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management, Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship and Bachelor of Science in Office Administration.PMMS had experienced several management changes in its evolution. They include the following presidents and their respective tenure:Capt. Crispulo J. Onrubia 1950Capt. Juan H. Acayan 1953Capt. Pacifico Pablo 1955Mr. Ramon M. Onrubia 1969Mr. Anthony M. Onrubia 1978Ms. Faustina M. Onrubia 1979Mr. Juan O. Nolasco III 1992 - presentAs one common entity under the present administration, both PMMS Manila and Las Piñas have clearly defined its goals and focused its visions to be a dynamic center of excellence for all maritime related programs to develop globally competitive manpower resources and to contribute substantially to the building of a strong and industrialized nation. It is also under its current management team that PMMS hopes to recapture the glory of its past– that of a pioneer, a trend setter and as the premier maritime education institution in the country.
