On March 3, 1945, Dr. John Forney established a charitable U.S. Navy hospital in Asinan. It became self-supporting on July 1, 1946 under Filipino administration, with Dr. Maximo Ebalo as the first Filipino director. Using $75,000 war reparations, the hospital moved to East Tapinac (now SM Central) on June 13, 1949. Dr. Alberto Galvez became director that same year. After Olongapo's turnover in 1959, it was renamed Olongapo Municipal Hospital, then became Olongapo City General Hospital on July 31, 1970. Following Mount Pinatubo's 1991 eruption, it relocated to the Asinan Elementary School site and was renamed James L. Gordon Memorial Hospital.
