Great team but be preparedThe good thingsThe management, including the team leader, were mostly great. They provided me the opportunity to take ownership of my process and run with it. I was able to propose optimizations, continuous improvement ideas, automation solutions and then carried those onwards myself with my team leader and management oversight every now and then gaining, almost full control of the processes I handled. My opinion, skills and knowledge where valued as I earned recognition awards and bonuses from all the effort I put into improving our tools, processes, training materials and relationship with my co-workers/counterparts from other offices in different countries.
At the time, the salary was high in comparison to what the other companies were paying for similar positions.
The challengesThe workload was simply a lot. Although I had freedom to basically shape the processes I handled almost completely independently, the con side was that I was often left alone handling the workload of an entire continent. Since things on my side were always okay-ish, the management didn't pay much attention to my pains and I was the last person on our department to get a backup in order to maintain the business continuity. Working up to 12 hours and sometimes more happened frequently.
On top of that, since I was a foreigner the opportunities to be promoted were also unheard of on my department. In part due to the local protectionist labor laws but maybe culture as well.
I really hope that the management fix the backup situation so people can truly go on leave.
