Eversley Childs Sanitarium is the first regional institution established purposely to make segregation and treatment of patients suffering from Hansen’s disease or leprosy in Central Visayas. This was the departure from the system of compulsory segregation of bacterio-positive cases in Culion, an island in Palawan. The approximate area of the Eversley Childs Sanitarium is 52.1387 hectares and is situated in Jagobiao, Mandaue City. The institution was built by the Leonard Wood Memorial Foundation with most funds donated by the late Mr. Eversley Childs, an American philanthropist of New York, USA. The total construction cost was PhP 400,000.00. It was formally turned over to the nationa Philippine government with 52 concrete buildings and was officially opened on May 30,1930 with 540 patients. Before World War II, the number of confined patients reached to over a thousand but with the implementation of Republic Act No. 4073 which provides for more liberalized domiciliary concept of management of people afflicted with Hansen's disease and with the success of the Multi-Drug Theraphy, the number of those confined steadily declined. And with the implementation of Department Order No. 72, s. 1994, that calls for the redirection of roles and responsibilities of sanitaria, Eversley Childs Sanitarium assumed the expanded role in 2002. Thus, six years ago, in addition to its original mandate as the lead agency for the National Leprosy Control program, it has opened 5 general service care, such as Obstetrics, Gynecology, Family Medicine, Pediatrics and Surgery.
