DAVAO ORIENTAL STATE UNIVERSITY"DOrSU"A University of Excellence, Innovation, and InclusionHISTORY AND DESCRIPTIONDavao Oriental State University (DOrSU) was established through Republic Act No. 11033, signed into law by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte at the Malacañang Palace on May 28, 2018. Its conversion results from House Bill 7007, authored by Congress Representative Joel Mayo Z. Almario, and Senate Bill 1617, filed by Senator Joel E. Villanueva. President Emeritus Edito B. Sumile successfully laid the groundwork for the University's conversion and was supported by his successor, Dr. Roy G. Ponce, who later became the first University President. Also pivotal to the success of the conversion process is the forward-looking initiative of Hon. Thelma Z. Almario and the dynamic leadership of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) under Chairperson Julian Prospero E. De Vera III and Commissioner Aldrin A. Darilag, the Presiding Chair of the DOrSU Board of Regents. Additionally, the Committee on Higher and Technical Education (CHTE), chaired by Hon. Mark O. Go, played a crucial role.At the forefront of this significant turning point are the concerted efforts of the University Conversion Technical Working Team, working in coordination with CHED Regional Office XI, led by Director Maricar R. Casquejo. These efforts are supported by the University's faculty, staff, students, Local Government Units (LGUs), and other stakeholders, who tirelessly work to ensure compliance with standards for Enrollment and Program Offerings, Faculty Requirements, Research Capability, Learning Resources and Support Structures, and Linkages and Outreach. These collective endeavors were pivotal in influencing the CHED Commission En Banc's (CEB) issuance of Resolution No. 293-2021, dated May 26, 2021, certifying DOrSU's full compliance with university standards. With its new status, the University envisions its continued role in nation-building by offering advanced technological instruction and pursuing cutting-edge research, extension, and production programs in various fields of science and technology. It has contributed significantly to producing professionals and experts who have contributed to advancing the Davao Region and beyond. Its charter mandates the offering of undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs in fields including agriculture and environmental studies, pure and applied sciences, behavioral and social sciences, law, culture and arts, tourism, business, nautical science and maritime transportation, industrial technology, engineering, education, and teacher training, communication and information technology, health sciences, developmental management and leadership, and other specialized areas. With a resolute dedication to expanding its impact, the institution underwent a transformative evolution, leading to its reconfiguration into Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology (DOSCST) on December 13, 1989. This transformative step was made possible through the enactment of Republic Act No. 6807. Notably, this transformation was a direct result of the tireless efforts and unwavering commitment of Hon. Thelma Z. Almario, who ardently championed this endeavor during her tenure as the 2nd Congressional District Representative of Davao Oriental. In 1991, the College found its permanent home on a 10-hectare campus in Guang-Guang, Dahican, City of Mati. This significant milestone was made possible by the benevolent contribution of the heirs of Don Jose Corro Martinez. Emboldened by this newfound foundation, the University's influence expanded beyond its initial boundaries, establishing campuses across the Province of Davao Oriental. Notable among these endeavors were the campuses established in San Isidro in November 1997, orchestrated by the dedicated efforts of Hon. Justina MB Yu, the campus in Cateel founded under the astute leadership of Hon. Camilo T. Nuñez in June 1999, and the Banaybanay campus, which came to fruition in June 2015 through the visionary leadership of Hon. Adalia C. Lopez. It's equally important to emphasize the University's pivotal role in delivering external classes in Baganga and Tarragona, Davao Oriental, reflecting its steadfast commitment to extending educational access.Today, the University stands unwavering in its pursuit of excellence, innovation, and inclusivity. Positioned as a premier institution in the easternmost part of the Philippines, it assumes a pivotal role in propelling sustainable development, regenerative science, and future-oriented education across all academic disciplines. Notably, the University assumes the role of a custodian for globally acclaimed natural treasures, including the Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary (MHRWS), the singular UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mindanao. Furthermore, the recognition of the Pujada and Mayo Bays among the Most Beautiful Bays of the World (MBBW) underscores the University's role in preserving and promoting these natural wonders. As a culmination of the aspirations of its founders, leaders, constituents, and the local and indigenous communities it serves, DOrSU stands as a living embodiment of its collective vision. This commitment is reflected in the institution's unswerving dedication to shaping a better future, both locally and beyond.Written by: Jhonnel P. Villegas and Alvin John M. Aligato
