The success of BongBong’s Piaya gives everyone the opportunity to remember a beautiful story that transpired in the 80’s.In 1981, Reynaldo "Bongbong" Villan worked as a helper in a bakery shop in Bacolod City. His skill in baking was very much apparent as he was tasked to take the place of the chief baker whenever the latter was not around. Unknown to Bongbong, these seemingly simple baking tasks entrusted to him, were the keys that would open greater opportunities for him.Two years after his stint at the bakery, he met a co-worker who got a recipe for making “PIAYA.” This was eagerly shared to him, and soon he developed the recipe and came up with his own unique way of making the delicacy. The big break came in 1984, when Bongbong, together with his wife, Ma. Lomer, decided to start their own home-based piaya business. With an initial capital of P80.00, and with family members comprising the staff, the couple was able to set up a small backyard factory, where they initially started producing their “piaya.” Their ingenuity when it comes to making delicacies was further proven, as they were able to add new products every year, even with a seemingly limited space. Since then, they developed an identity for their products, and were able to captivate the taste of Negrenses. The demand for their products grew tremendously, and soon enough, the hard work that the couple put in gave birth to the first Bongbong's store in Singcang in 1989.Ma. Lomer handled the entire operation, including human resource management, accounting, sales and marketing in the early years of the business. Her dedication and support to her husband created a perfect tandem, which eventually made BongBong’s as the No. 1 brand of pasalubong chain in the region. In just a matter of years, the sole backyard food factory has turned into a large-scale business that made a mark in the pasalubong industry. At present, BongBong’s has become synonymous with the word “pasalubong” and “piaya.” Tourists and locals flock the different branches of Bongbong’s just to savor the sweet and inviting taste of piaya, a flat unleavened bread filled with muscovado sugar, which has its own way of making individuals want for more.Over time, BongBong’s has accumulated a host of awards such as the Pasalubong Center of the Year Award 2011, Healthy Workplace Award, Model Entrepreneur Award, and many more. It now has two factories, with one located at Bangga Pauline, Alijis, Bacolod City, and the other in La Carlota City, where huge quantities of piaya are produced daily to meet the growing demand for these sumptuous treats. The People Behind BongBong’sReynaldo B. Villan, popularly known as "Bongbong," is the leading founder of BongBong’s Piaya and Barquillos. His name has become an icon in the pasalubong industry, bringing forth fresh and new ideas in delicacy-making. As the President of BongBong Villan Corporation (BVC), he actively participates in the production and management of the company. His perseverance, industriousness and compassion towards others, makes him one of the greatest leaders and entrepreneurs of today’s highly competitive pasalubong industry.Ma. Lomer C. Villan, the ever dynamic General Manager of BVC, is one of the main forces that helped steered BongBong’s towards greatness. Her endearing dedication and “hands-on” style of management ensured the company’s growth and guarded the ideals that BongBong’s stands for, making it one of the most-awarded pasalubong centers in the country.Mercedita Cañedo, Ma. Lomer's mother, is the silent voice that played a huge part in the success of BongBong’s. She was the one who gave the couple the idea of starting their own piaya business. Her constant reminder to her son-in-law to engage in the business of making piaya, and her strong faith in its potential, helped guide the couple from the time they set up the business up to the company’s present success.
