About the ProjectThe Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project (DCBWSP) of the Davao City Water District (DCWD) is one of the country’s largest bulk water supply infrastructure projects that will shi Davao City's dependence from groundwater wells as its main water supply to the more sustainably-sourced surface water from the Tamugan River. This project will enable the DCWD to recharge the majority of its wells, ready to be reactivated to respond to Davao City’s rapid growth, protecting it from environmental degradation, land subsidence, and saltwater intrusion. The DCBWSP involves two components: Part A component is handled by Apo Agua involves the construction of intake facilities, a water treatment facility, and treated water pipelines; Part B is being handled by DCWD, involves the tapping and interconnecting of pipes, installation of reservoirs and laying of distribution lines. The distribution of water to the consumers will remain solely with DCWD.Apo Agua is committed to developing a sustainable bulk water supply for Davao City. A first in the country, the project’s water treatment facility will be powered by renewable energy sourced from its own two (2) Megawatts run-of-river hydroelectric power plant. The water treatment plant’s unique feature, the first of its kind in the country, is called the water-energy nexus concept- Water for energy, energy for water. wherein the same water used to generate power is treated and supplied to DCWD’s water reservoirs.Set to be one of the country’s largest private bulk water supply facilities, the project will provide DCWD with over 300 million liters per day (MLD) or 109.5 million cubic meters (cu.m.) per year of safe drinking water.Apo Agua will ensure that its water supply conforms to the criteria set by the Department of Health Administrative Order 2017-0010 also known as the Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water of 2017.The treated water produced by Apo Agua Infrastructura, Inc. will be distributed to the DCWD’s eight (8) Water Supply Systems namely Dumoy, Calinan, Tugbok, Panacan, Cabanan, Talandang, Mandug and Indangan.Apo Agua is also taking steps to ensure the protection and conservation of the Panigan-Tamugan Watershed – Davao City’s next source of water. The company adopted 50 hectares of land in the watershed through Davao City Water District’s Adopt-A-Site Project to rehabilitate this water source. An additional 200-hectare National Greening Program through a memorandum of agreement with Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)- RXI and FARDECO Agricultural Multipurpose Cooperative have been signed to add watershed protection and rehabilitation within the Tamugan- Panigan Watershed. Apo Agua and the Davao City Watershed Management Council also worked on an integrated watershed management plan and the baselining study to assess and recommend policies for the Panigan-Tamugan Watershed. These significant partnerships are aimed at ensuring the long-term security of Davao City’s water supply.

Rewarding experience in protecting workers and promoting a safe workplace as a Safety Officer.
The good thingsAs a Safety Officer, I enjoy helping keep workers safe and preventing accidents at work. I like conducting safety trainings annually such as CONFINED SPACE ENTRY, WORKING AT HEIGHT, 8hr MESH and toolbox meetings because they help workers understand safety rules and hazards. I also enjoy checking work areas and making sure safety equipment , rescue equipment and PPE are ready and in good condition. Another good part of the job is helping during emergencies and assisting workers when needed. Being a Safety Officer helps me improve my communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Most importantly, I am happy knowing that my work helps protect people and the workplace.
The challengesAs a Safety Officer, some challenges are ensuring that all workers always follow safety rules and wear proper PPE. Sometimes, there is lack of safety awareness, poor housekeeping, and unsafe work practices that can lead to accidents. Another area for improvement is the availability and maintenance of safety equipment and tools to ensure they are always ready for use. Improving teamwork and encouraging everyone to report hazards and unsafe conditions can also help create a safer workplace.
