What's it like to be a Veterinarian?
Veterinarians are medical professionals who specialize in treating animals. Veterinarians can specialize in treating household pets, farm animals and wild animals. Many Veterinarians are also trained to perform emergency surgeries on animals. Like human doctors, Veterinarians diagnose, examine and prescribe treatments for animals. Some Veterinarians serve zoos and conservation sites and must be equipped with knowledge of the diseases that can affect wild animals. When dealing with pet owners and animal handlers, they must also show strong communication skills as they educate humans on how to best look after their animals.Tasks and duties
- Examining animals and checking their overall health.
- Diagnosing illnesses and injuries.
- Conducting laboratory tests like X-rays, ultrasounds and blood tests.
- Dressing wounds of injured animals.
- Vaccinating animals and conducting deworming.
- Prescribing medication and treatment.
- Advising pet owners on healthy animal diets, nutrition and healthcare needs.
- Performing surgeries on animals.
- Maintaining medical records.
How to become a Veterinarian
Veterinarians must be licensed professionals to practice veterinary medicine in the Philippines.
- 1.Complete a six-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program that consists of a two-year preparatory (pre-vet) period and a four-year proper curriculum (vet proper).
- 2.Pass the Veterinarian Licensure Examination conducted by the Professional Regulation Commission.
- 3.Complete a masters degree in veterinary medicine, veterinary epidemiology or a related field if you wish to enhance your knowledge or go into research.
- 4.Consider starting off as a Veterinarian’s Assistant to gain experience.
- 5.After many years of experience as a Veterinarian, you could consider starting your own veterinary practice.
