What's it like to be a Travel Consultant?
Travel Consultants work directly with customers to help plan their trips, making travel arrangements such as booking flights and hotel accommodations and providing clients with helpful travel information. They may operate as freelance consultants or as part of an agency. Apart from dealing with clients, Travel Consultants will often work with and frequently speak to airlines, hotels, and Tour Operators.
Tasks and duties
- Dealing with individuals and corporate accounts.
- Attending to walk-in and telephone inquiries.
- Booking flights, hotel accommodation, rental transportation, and other travel requirements.
- Coming up with a proposed travel itinerary and package for clients.
- Negotiating special rates for clients traveling in groups.
How to become a Travel Consultant
You can become a Travel Consultant without a formal qualification. However, some employers may prefer candidates with relevant training, such as a degree in human resources or tourism.

Graduate with a bachelor degree in HRM or Tourism. A college degree may be advantageous.

Develop proficiency in speaking and writing in English. Fluency in other languages will give you an edge.

Become adept in using basic Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel.

Create expertise in domestic and international travel requirements. Personal travel experience is advantageous.

Show sales skills such as persuasion, presentation, and communication.
- 6.
After gaining experience as a Travel Consultant, consider progressing to a role (if working for a travel agency) such as Branch Manager, Travel Director, or Operations Manager.
