What's it like to be a Pharmacist?
Pharmacists sell and distribute medicines to the public. They must be sure that the quantity of drugs they dispense is in line with regulations and a physician’s prescription. They also ensure that the quality of medicines they provide meets healthcare standards to benefit the customer. Pharmacists work at drugstores, hospitals, government institutions, the academe and medical research facilities.Tasks and duties
- Dispensing medications in accordance with physician prescriptions.
- Answering customer enquiries and providing advice for taking medicines.
- Evaluating prescriptions for accuracy and authenticity.
- Adhering to government standards on the quality and quantity of medicines.
- Finding, labeling and packaging medicines.
- Updating and maintaining an inventory of medications.
How to become a Pharmacist
Aspiring Pharmacists are expected to have a high aptitude in math and sciences which can be learned through a degree in BS Pharmacy. Taking the STEM strand in Senior High School is advantageous for those looking to pursue this career.
- 1.Graduate with a bachelor degree in pharmacy, chemistry, health sciences or a related field.
- 2.Pursue an internship at a hospital or drugstore.
- 3.Pass the PRC Licensure Examination for Pharmacists. You need to obtain a score of at least 75% in the exam, with no score lower than 50% in any subject.
- 4.Attend the PRC oath-taking ceremony and obtain your license. PRC licenses must be renewed every three years.
- 5.After gaining experience, you could get promoted to Senior Pharmacist or Pharmacy Manager. You can also consider taking a job in the academic or medical research sector, or start your own pharmacy.
