What's it like to be a Maintenance Supervisor?
A Maintenance Supervisor oversees and coordinates the workers who maintain and repair electrical, plumbing, ventilation and other building systems. They may be responsible for evaluating problematic systems or facilities and determining what installation or repair services need to be performed. Maintenance related duties include scheduling repairs, promoting workplace safety and managing work orders. Maintenance Supervisors may work in a variety of settings including residential properties, commercial buildings, schools, hospitals or municipal facilities. This career often involves a blend of in-office administrative work and some hands-on work within the facility they manage.
Tasks and duties
- Overseeing and coordinating the maintenance and repair work conducted by the maintenance team in facilities and utilities.
- Developing and implementing maintenance strategies, procedures and methods across the organization.
- Tracking maintenance and repair work to ensure tasks are completed on schedule.
- Conducting routine inspections of premises to determine repair and renovation needs.
- Directing, training and supervising maintenance staff, ensuring they adhere to safety and quality protocols.
- Investigating and diagnosing faults and problems and determining appropriate solutions.
- Managing budgets for maintenance activities, and ordering necessary supplies and parts.
How to become a Maintenance Supervisor
A bachelor degree is preferred. Being a licensed engineer is an advantage.
- 1.Earn a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or related field.
- 2.Pass the certification exam of the Professional Regulation Authority to become a licensed Engineer.
- 3.Gain experience in facilities management.
- 4.Consider getting additional certifications in facility management or maintenance management.
- 5.With ample experience in a leadership role, you could become a Maintenance Supervisor.
