What's it like to be a Legal Officer?
Legal Officers are the resident consultants and administrators for all legal affairs that occur within a company and its partners, associates, and clients. They provide corporate law counsel to stakeholders and ensure that the company is compliant with all laws governing it. Problem-solving, research, and analytical skills are essential to the role. Legal Officers work in law firms, corporations, government, and non-government organizations.
Tasks and duties
- Drafting, reviewing, and revising company contracts and other legal documents.
- Reviewing legal requirements of clients and partners to align with company standards.
- Providing legal advice for company matters and dealings.
- Assuring the company’s legal compliance with all government requirements.
- Researching existing and potential legal issues that may impact company operations.
- Representing the company in legal proceedings.
- Conducting investigations, gathering evidence, and drafting documents for court cases.
How to become a Legal Officer
A Bachelor of Laws (JD) degree and membership in the Philippine bar are required to work as a Legal Officer. Aspiring Legal officers must complete four years to graduate with a bachelor degree, another four years to graduate from law school, and pass the Philippine Bar Examination which takes approximately a year to review for.
Graduate with a bachelor degree in a pre-law field such as political science, psychology or history.
Take and pass the Philippine Law School Admission Test (PhilSAT).
Consider taking an entry-level job in law, such as Legal Assistant or Paralegal.
Graduate with a bachelor of laws (Juris Doctor), specializing in corporate, labor, or commercial law.
Pass the Philippine Bar Examination (PBE), which is conducted annually. Upon passing, partake in the oath-taking ceremony of the Supreme Court of the Philippines and register to the Roll of Attorneys.
Get promoted to higher positions such as Senior Legal Officer or Chief Legal Officer.
