What's it like to be a Guidance Counsellor?
Guidance Counselors are usually part of the non-teaching staff of a school’s faculty, and focus on assisting students in achieving their full potential, both academically and socially. They initiate programs that can help students realize their career objectives. They regularly conduct assessments of the student body to be able to recommend approaches to ensure that a level of quality education is maintained. Schools also task Guidance Counselors to act as evaluators to address social and behavioral problems of individual students through actual on-on-one counseling as needed.Tasks and duties
- Evaluating student learning abilities.
- Addressing social or personal issues that may affect a student’s studies.
- Recording and maintaining student performance inside and outside the classroom.
- Providing guidance based on the results of aptitude testing to maximize a student's potential.
- Helping students develop their academic accomplishments.
- Providing counseling to parents or students.
- Helping students identify career goals.
How to become a Guidance Counsellor
To become a Guidance Counselor, you will need to complete formal education and obtain a license to practice.
- 1.Complete a qualified bachelor degree in psychology or counseling. This undergraduate degree can take three to four years to complete.
- 2.Take a masters degree in guidance and counseling. This two year masters program is a prerequisite to take the Guidance and Counseling Licensure Examination conducted by the Board of Guidance and Counseling under the supervision of the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC).
- 3.Pass the Guidance and Counseling Licensure Examination. Taking this examination allows you to practice counseling in different fields. This credential may be preferred by educational institutions, research firms and medical facilities.
- 4.Take up certified specializations in counseling or pursue higher studies. Successful Guidance Counselors take specializations to increase their employability.
