General Managers work in a variety of settings including retail stores, offices and customer service-oriented businesses. Because they are involved in different business aspects such as management, operations, and administration, General Managers have many duties. They may supervise staff hiring, monitor budgets, craft marketing strategies, set sales goals, and ensure that team members are meeting business targets. In some industries such as retail, the General Manager is a customer facing role, and they gather feedback from clients, resolve conflicts, and help to maintain a high level of customer service.Tasks and duties

How to become a General Manager
General Managers need to be able to lead teams, formulate financial strategies, and improve an organization’s overall operations. To work as a General Manager, you will need formal education and extensive experience.
- 1.Finish a degree. Though you can be a General Manager with any degree, completing a business-related one such as business management, finance, or business administration can give you an edge over other jobseekers. Some employers may prefer candidates with a degree related to their industry. For instance, a computer software company may want to hire a General Manager with a degree related to information technology.
- 2.Gain at least 10 to 15 years of work experience. Though a General Manager’s skills are transferable across settings, some employers may prefer candidates who have at least 5 years of experience in their particular industry.
- 3.Secure an entry-level role in the industry you are targeting. Some companies prefer hiring General Managers from their roster. This means that the longer you work in an organization, the better chances you have of securing a higher position.
- 4.Add to your management knowledge and skills by enrolling in certificate courses, online classes and seminars. You may also consider getting a masters degree related to business or the industry you’re working in to advance your career.
