What's it like to be a Facilities Engineer?
Facilities Engineers are responsible for the overall maintenance of large buildings or complexes. Their typical duties include ensuring systems like HVAC, plumbing, electrical and fire safety are working optimally, and planning renovation projects when necessary. They also oversee operational budgets and may supervise maintenance personnel. These engineers often work within industries that operate large facilities, such as universities, hospitals, hotels and large corporate offices. With an essential role in maintaining the health and safety standards of a facility, they interact with service providers, regulatory bodies and internal stakeholders, ensuring the facility complies with all codes and regulations.
Tasks and duties
- Developing and implementing facilities management procedures for establishments or structures.
- Coordinating with staff, clients or stakeholders to manage, oversee and regulate building capacity.
- Monitoring facility and equipment performance and carrying out maintenance or repair work.
- Supervising teams of workers who carry out routine site maintenance.
- Evaluating, developing and improving the efficiency of systems and infrastructure.
- Overseeing and managing renovation projects, from design and planning to execution.
How to become a Facilities Engineer
A bachelor degree is required as well as a license to practice the profession.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, or electrical engineering.
- 2.Pass the Engineering Licensure Examination given by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). Get certified as a professional engineer or Registered Mechanical/Electrical/Civil Engineer (RME/REE).
- 3.Gain experience in facilities management or engineering through internships or entry-level positions.
- 4.With substantial experience, you can move up to Facilities Manager or Facilities Director.
