A Desktop Engineer works with computer hardware and software systems in a variety of industries. Part of their role involves working with other IT professionals to ensure the seamless operation of computer systems for business needs. In some cases, a Desktop Engineer might also manage cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive information.
Tasks and duties
- Installing, maintaining and troubleshooting computer hardware and software.
- Analyzing and resolving technical issues, either remotely or on-site, to minimize downtime.
- Assisting end-users with various system problems and providing technical support.
- Documenting technical issues, resolution information, and maintaining hardware and software inventory.
- Making software and hardware upgrades to meet emerging technology standards.
- Establishing and implementing policies to ensure quality, security, and protocols for desktop systems.
- Participating in testing and deployment of new applications and systems.
How to become a Desktop Engineer
A bachelor degree and relevant experience are required for the role of Desktop Engineer.
- Earn a bachelor degree in computer science, computer engineering or related field.
- Consider getting certifications such as the Certified Computer Engineer (CCpE) and Professional Computer Engineer (PCpE), Microsoft, or CISCO certifications.
