What's it like to be a Customs Broker?
Customs Brokers work with clients to ensure legal and safe movement of their goods from country to country. They are in charge of tariffs, or the taxes for the goods that cross national boundaries. Customs Brokers work for custom brokerage firms, freight companies and other trade businesses. Clients consult with Customs Brokers to know their rights and options when it comes to transporting and trading their products. They assist clients in filing customs documents, collecting taxes and clearing shipments before transport to another location.Tasks and duties
- Advising clients about import and export laws.
- Representing clients for transactions.
- Appraising shipments in accordance with requirements.
- Determining and collecting taxes for shipments.
- Liaising with government bodies to obtain requirements for shipments.
- Preparing and processing documents necessary for clearing shipments.
- Keeping records of client documents, transactions and shipments.
How to become a Customs Broker
Customs Brokers are usually degree holders and licensed professionals who are knowledgeable and up-to-date with the customs regulations in their chosen regions.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in international relations, export management, customs administration or a related field.
- 2.Take an internship at a brokerage firm, shipping line or independent business for on-the-job experience.
- 3.Pass the PRC Licensure Exam for customs brokers which is held annually. PRC licenses need to be renewed every three years.
- 4.After becoming a Customs Broker, gain more experience to work your way towards higher positions such as Export Manager, or start a new customs brokerage firm.
