What's it like to be a Cloud Engineer?
A Cloud Engineer is primarily responsible for designing, implementing, and managing cloud-based systems that are important for organizations. A Cloud Engineer is now an important part of a business’ technology team, as they primarily ensure that an organization’s cloud system works properly and that the business data stored within it is secure and accessible. To do this, a Cloud Engineer must build and maintain the cloud network, also troubleshooting any issues that may arise.
Tasks and duties
- Identifying and evaluating cloud-based solutions with the help of engineering and development teams.
- Designing and building cloud systems and infrastructure with the usage of tools such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
- Making regular improvements and modifications to the existing cloud systems.
- Being involved in all stages of the software development process for cloud solutions, including planning, requirements gathering, development, testing, and quality assurance.
- Collaborating with other IT professionals to integrate cloud systems with other technologies and software used in the organization.
- Optimizing infrastructure for the cloud system to improve cost and performance efficiency.
- Troubleshooting problems, identifying the root cause, and creating preventive measures.
- Educating teams on the implementation of new cloud technologies and initiatives.
Cloud Engineers are expected to have strong skills in programming, networking, and cybersecurity. They also work closely with other computer professionals to ensure the cloud system is integrated with other software and hardware that the business uses.
How to become a Cloud Engineer
To work as a Cloud Engineer, employers may prefer a bachelor degree in computer science, management systems, or information technology.
