What's it like to be a Chief Operating Officer?
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is typically the second highest position in an organization and reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The COO is an important decision maker with the skills and experience to lead an organisation in the CEO’s absence. A COO's scope of responsibilities will vary depending on the type of business or industry they are in, but they usually oversee processes, people and projects that are part of a business’ regular operations.

- Supervising and managing a company's daily operations in order to hit specific targets.
- Regularly reviewing and enforcing the business' standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Ensuring minimum standards of quality are met.
- Assessing and mitigating potential risks associated with operations.
- Making processes as efficient as possible.
How to become a Chief Operating Officer
A combination of formal education and strong leadership experience is required to become a COO.
- 1.Complete a relevant bachelor degree in business, economics or management.
- 2.Consider completing a masters degree in business administration (MBA) or a postgraduate course relevant to the industry you’re working in. Some businesses will require a specific certification in operations or process excellence.
- 3.Get experience in various leadership positions across multiple workplaces or progress your career within a company, particularly within the process and operations side of a business.
