What's it like to be an Auditor?
An Auditor may be a type of Accountant that monitors financial records to spot inconsistencies and possible fraudulent practices. They implement risk-management measures to protect an organization’s assets, while ensuring the legality of its accounting methods. However, Auditors may also evaluate an organization’s processes and systems beyond the financial aspect. For instance, Operational Auditors assess a company’s goals, planning procedures, and performance to find areas for improvement. Meanwhile, Compliance Auditors check if the business follows government regulations on various aspects such as environmental protection, health and safety, fair labor and many others.
Tasks and duties
- Ensuring truthfulness and legal compliance of financial records.
- Reviewing accounting figures and procedures for anomalies.
- Crafting and carrying out audit and risk management processes.
- Formulating audit targets and plans to help an organization achieve its business goals.
- Reporting audit results and making recommendations.
- Staying updated on best audit practices and business trends.
How to become an Auditor
To effectively do their job, Auditors must be vigilant and methodical. They must have detailed knowledge of what they are auditing, therefore formal education is required.
- For aspiring Financial Auditors, take a bachelor degree in accountancy, which takes four years to complete. Other types of Auditors may take courses relevant to their field. For example, Auditors that monitor information systems may take a degree in information technology or management information systems. Auditors that evaluate compliance to environmental regulations may complete a degree in environmental science.
- Complete a relevant internship in your senior year. This gives you professional experience, which you can include in your resume. This also gives you a chance to network with experienced Auditors.
- Get certified. For Financial Auditors, being a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is the most popular path. But you can also pursue other professional certifications such as Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).
- Gain at least three years of related work experience. Apply for an entry-level role in auditing such as Junior Auditor, Audit Examiner or Audit Associate.
- Think about pursuing a masters degree to grow your career. This can boost your marketability for senior positions such as Audit Manager and Assurance Manager, and eventually Chief Audit Executive and Chief Executive Officer.
